What is Twitter/X Character Counter?

A Twitter/X character counter is a tool that helps you compose tweets within the platform's 280-character limit. It accounts for Twitter's unique character counting rules, including how URLs are handled (all links are wrapped as t.co short links, each counting as 23 characters regardless of the original URL length).

Our free online Twitter character counter provides real-time feedback as you type, showing your remaining characters, a visual progress bar, and whether your text exceeds the limit. It also detects URLs in your text and adjusts the character count accordingly, giving you the same effective count that Twitter's own composer uses.

For longer content, the tool calculates how many tweets you would need for a thread. This helps you plan Twitter threads before posting, ensuring each segment fits within the character limit.

All text analysis happens locally in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to any server, and the tool works instantly with no network dependency.

How to Use This Tool

  1. Type or paste your text — Enter your tweet content in the text area.
  2. Watch the counter — The remaining character count updates in real time. The progress bar changes color as you approach the limit.
  3. Check URL handling — If your text contains URLs, the tool adjusts the count to reflect Twitter's t.co wrapping (23 characters per URL).
  4. Plan threads — If your text exceeds 280 characters, the tool shows how many tweets you'd need for a thread.
  5. Copy your text — Click "Copy Text" to copy your tweet to the clipboard, ready to paste into Twitter/X.
